The Hills Have Lies

A member of the Blu-ray.com FORUM has the following All American HD Nightmare to share:

You can almost smell this upscaled bullshit through the screen, can't you? It's coming out a mere week before Alexandre Aja's largely superior remake hits Blu-ray stateside, so it's clear that Image is kicking this poor flashbacking German Shepherd out the door as fast as they can in the hopes that people will just get confused and buy the Wes Craven flick by mistake. No, it doesn't make any fucking sense to me either, but I can see no other sensible reason why they'd put this on Blu-ray and not C.H.U.D or Slugs or any of the other dozen Anchor Bay titles they've acquired in the last few months.

What I do know is that I'm not going to pay Image $18 for their "Midnight Madness" release. The only madness on display here is that they thought they could charge even a low MSRP for a shitty upscale of an 8 year old SD transfer that was never any good to start with! Vamp and Hellraiser II have already had largely satisfactory HD releases in Europe, so with any luck this will be the only post-Anchor Bay upscale to worry about...

Evidently Hellraiser II: Hellbound is similarly terrible, but I've not seen the screenshots myself. Sigh. I've had Dead Heat pre-ordered up until now, but after this I'll definitely be waiting for a review.

I'm hoping that the German release (as shown HERE) is using the same transfer; it may not be razor sharp, but there's enough "real" detail that I don't think it's an upscale.

Oh my god.

Ridiculous. NOTHING about those images even hints at HD. This transfer makes Shriek Show look good. I was really excited for several titles in this "midnight madness" series...very worried now.

Well, the DVDBeaver review is up:

Leaving aside his dubious comments, the images are telling. This doesn't just look like the dvd, it looks exactly like the dvd. Why anyone would want to pay $13+ for this when used copies of the DVD can be had for a buck and some change I'll never know.

Yeah...They really do look identical.

Nice one, Image. All Midnight Madness pre-orders = cancelled.

I wouldn't rule out the whole midnight madness series just yet. Even Echo Bridge has a few great discs kicking around among their laughable garbage. You never know what factors went into the Hills Have Eyes' release. Kentai mentioned the possibility that it's a shameless attempt to cash in off the re-make's blu ray release. So maybe they never even tried. And maybe they are re-using pre-existing transfers for some of these other releases...or maybe I'm just being overly optimistic because my Hellraiser 2 blu ray already shipped before I could cancel....

Aww, well my fingers are crossed for your sake, Tommy. (And for the sake of myself and the rest of the fans of these films.)
