Best Fucking Music Video Ever

G.I. JANE (Fill Me Up), Jackson and his Computerband

A friend of mine who's been encouraging me to music a bit more more often sent me this the other night and holy. Fucking. SHIT. It's like everything awesome about Japanese animation circa 1989 just exploded all over your face, and then told you to lick it clean before it took the last train home. The song itself ain't bad, but if the above three minute eyegasm doesn't leave you twitching and drooling with joy, you have zero business reading this in the first place. It's fucking amazing, and I want more. More! MORE!!

This deliriously minimalist ode to Toshio Maeda's Legend of the Overfiend, Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Wicked City, and even Hiroyuki Yamaga's DAICON IV was evidently directed by French pop-art absurdist tag-team Mrzyk & Moriceau. The song itself is available on Jackson Fourgeaud's 2013 album GLOW, or as a single on modestly priced VINYL with a totally appropriate jacket and the requisite remixes.

There's really nothing more I can say. I mean, fuck me - just look at it.

Cool video. Reminds me a lot of this one, which also has an Overfiend vibe.

So, uh...what can you tell me about Viz Media's Sailor Moon Blu-ray? Somebody told me Toei Animation has just been doing upscales and that's likely what this is to be. The trailer in 720p sure doesn't look very promising.

Still, I heard the previous DVDs looked like sweaty dick, and this looks all right at least. If it is just an upscale and depending on the price difference (likely to be huge), I'll probably just pick it up on DVD, unless there's a big advantage to having upscaled content on BD versus letting my PS3 upscale the video (granted the DVD encoding is done well).

PSA: I'll probably have more to say on this later, but, since you asked!

While I won't deny that Viz' new trailer looks like upscaled YouTube vomit from a half-decade ago, whoever suggested that Toei Animation doesn't create HD masters of their properties is an idiot. I may not have been totally thrilled with Dragon Ball Kai which smoothed over quite a bit of high frequency detail in an effort to minimize film grain, but I won't deny that they were fresh HD masters pulled from the original camera negatives, and that it looks substantially better on Blu-ray than it ever could have on DVD. Toei may be heavy handed with their processing, but they're not upscales, unless there's some very specific title that hasn't been brought to my attention.

Toei prepped HD masters for Hokuto no Ken and released them a few years ago on DVD. The first 55 episodes of Saint Seiya are getting a new Blu-ray box set in Japan next month. The entire Go Nagai Super Robot movie cycle has been released on Blu-ray for some time, much to my morbid fascination. Pitiful as this is to say, even their initial stumbling out of the gate with Galaxy Express 999: The Movie looks better than the treatment Disney gave The Aristocats or The Sword in the Stone, so if Toei's track record can be "Consistently Less Awful Than Disney", I'll try to grin and bear it.

All previous Sailormoon North American releases were based on analogue tape masters made with the intent for SD broadcast back in the day, and yes, "Sweaty Dick" might be a surprisingly appropriate descriptor. Toei Animation may be stupid, but they've always given FUNimation more or less free reign with Dragon Ball Z because they know that'll make them some bank. This is very much an equivalent title from a market perspective, and if Viz does the smart thing and asks nicely for a hard drive full of ProRes HDCAM-SR dumps, we have very little to worry about.

The far bigger issue here will be that this was a 16mm produced title from the 90s with a lot of optical effects. It'll look as good as the material can, I'm sure, but there's going to be a very visible point of diminishing returns on older TV shows. The only 90s Magical Girl show that's going to hold up was CARD CAPTOR SAKURA, which was - for god knows what reason - shot entirely on 35mm film.

Viz has, so far, done very little to leave me concerned that the Sailormoon BDs will suck. I'm honestly interested in buying their first RANMA 1/2 set as a curio to see how good at doing a long-running TV series they are, but then I remember that I can't stand Rumiko TAKAHASHI and then I spend money on something no less stupid instead.
